A variable length of synthetic or metal material connected to the end of a fishing line. In fly fishing the leader is usually a monofilament that tapers from the relatively thick fly line down to a small, thin tippet. Leaders can be a tapering series of progressively thinner diameters of monofilament tied together or a commercially available knotless design.
